How to Prevent Top Layer from Being Filled?
How to Prevent Top Layer from Being Filled?
Please see attached. In the preview mode, the hole is empty but even when at 0% infill and, "Vase Mode", turned on, this hole gets filled which wastes time and filament and prevents this vase from being a real vase.

Set top layers to zero.

That isn't one that you would do in Vase mode. That is one that you do in normal mode, because it is already a vase shape.
(Vase mode works to turn a solid filled shape into a vase.)
Something that we see in S3D is an auto-correct option will attempt to fill holes in a design that we don't intend it to. Check all the options to see if you have something turned on that does an auto-correct.
Unfortunately that auto-correct probably wouldn't be happening if the tops of those spirals were correctly closed, which means that they likely aren't. When you cut the top of the vase off in your outside program, you might not have closed off the open tops of the fins. You might need to check the design over again, and make sure you have them closed properly.
(You're getting there though.....all part of the design process. And meshes are a bear to work with. )

Re: How to Prevent Top Layer from Being Filled?
Thank you both for your input! At least for this issue, the fix was setting the bottom and top layers to 0 although I do know this method of cutting prints that I performed was probably done sloppy thus leaving the top and bottom layers full! Thank you both!
