If this design works, the electronics will be completely outside the heated area. The enclosed area will only ever extend down as far as the bed. Mharter is looking at the design to see if it's feasible this weekend. If he can cut the parts, I'll build one and test it, before making a complete ass out of myself.....It's just an idea I had at this point, very experimental, and no cool electronics modifications - I wouldn't even know where to start with those, and they are waaay out of my comfort zone. (Chuckle!)

If it does work to keep sufficient heat on the build area though, it will be a good "poor man's enclosure", for those who just print the hot stuff occasionally, or who need to switch back and forth easily. Most of what I'll be printing will actually do better without an enclosure, so I need something that I can switch out without fuss.

That's assuming that the materials that I've ordered work out the way I hope they will....we'll see. Might be a complete bust - first passes generally are. (Gonna try to not get my hopes up too much. :D )

I was thinking of just running it in a closet with a space heater when printing abs - how is that for low tech?
What would be the safe operating temperature range of an m2?
The range for heated enclosures seems to be about 90-130 °f

The heated build plate usually is sufficient in an enclosure for a heat source depending on your target temp !

I too am planning to build an enclosure for my new M2. Below is a super cheesy MS Paint sketch of what I'm planning:

Image

Basically I'm going to have two chambers, the top for the printer itself, and the bottom for the electronics. The top chamber will have an exhaust fan that is controlled by a temperature controller, and few small filtered inlets. I'm also mounting heat sinks and fans on each stepper to hopefully keep them cool in the heated chamber.

The bottom chamber will have fans that are always on when the system is powered up. The RAMBO board will mount directly under the printer relatively close the to same position it normally is, so the existing wires should be long enough to reach. I'm also running an OctoPrint setup, so the Pi and stuff will be in the bottom chamber as well.

Just throwing that out there to hopefully inspire some others, or maybe have someone tell me I'm crazy and to just give up, lol.

Looks very cool! Be sure to post a pic once you build it. :D
