First M2 print [bracelet] is looking bad, but why?

Post by Lou » Sun Jun 14, 2015 2:10 pm

Trying my first print today, and the bracelet is what I've chosen.

Here's the image:

Any ideas what is going on? I am using the black ABS that MakerGear supplied.

Thanks

Possibly it's not hot enough and the filament is not properly melting to the layer underneath. Make sure that the fan is OFF all the time when printing ABS, and if that's not the problem, then try raising the temperature in 5 or 10 degree increments.

It's pretty aggressive to do your first print in ABS. . . Most of us start out with PLA to get the feel of the printer without the difficulties of working with ABS. So you should expect a bit of tweaking before it comes out right. Feel free to post your settings, so the rest of us can see everything that's going on and make suggestions.

Are you sure it's ABS and not PLA? I don't remember getting sample ABS with my printer. Can you smell it when it's extruding? Does it smell like nothing/cotton candy, or does it smell like stinky hot plastic?

I ran a second test with no fan and got exactly the same results. I checked the page that came with the packaging, and sure enough, it turns out I have a spool of PLA and not ABS! So I'll run another test later or tomorrow with the proper temperatures and see what that gets me.

Thanks for the replies.

That works with MakerGear PLA, but I can tell you that the eSUN PLA I got smells just as bad as ABS. I have no idea what they did to it to make it smell like that. In every other respect it's obviously PLA, but man, what a stench.

Esun pla definitely has more of a plastic smell than others I have used. I don't feel its as bad as abs however, that stuff makes my nose burn. That's part of the reason I am in love with their petg. No smell at all.

Okay, I ran another couple of tests and got better results. However there are still imperfections.

In the image below I show the bracelet print, and it has small holes and and a slight wavy warped pattern in the area closest to the camera.

Material : Black PLA
V3b nozzle : 215C
Bed: 60C
No fan

Any thoughts?

Hmm. The test I ran before that one had the fan on, and showed more warping. The fan off was the subsequent experiment I posted above.
