Stepper Motor Question

Post by johnr » Thu Jun 18, 2015 5:21 am

Hey guys, I wondering how hot the stepper motors should get. Mine gets really hot and you can't touch them for more than 4 seconds. Is that okay for the stepper motors? Should I stick a fan to them or something? Thanks for you time.

Stepper motors should not get hot. The one exception is the Z-axis motor on M2s that shipped prior to sometime in early 2013. These have a higher resistance and get quite hot to the touch. If that's your problem, then you can try a fan, but in the end you can probably expect a shorter lifespan for that motor (mine died after two years). If it's any of the other motors, then something's wrong and you should contact MakerGear support right away.

I agree with Tim. The only motor that gets hot is my Z-axis motor for my M2 - it hasn't given out yet, but it gets extremely hot to the touch. The only motor that gets warm (but not hot) would be the extruder motor - but that's dependent on how long the job's been running for. None of the X/Y motors get hot.

If any of of your x/y motors are heating up to a hot temperature, I'd suggest you get into contact with Makergear support ASAP. If your extruder motor's running hot too, that might be another problem.

The extruder motor runs at a higher current (~ 1A vs 0.7A of the X/Y motors), so it's expected it'll be a bit hotter.

yes, only motor that gets hot on any m2 made in the past 2 years is the extruder. my extruder runs around 60c. x and y around 40c. z is about room temp.
