Maghold Build Plate?

Post by Mach » Wed Dec 09, 2015 4:11 am

I found this website searching around. http://hilo90mhz.com/maghold-build-plat ... d-printer/

Not sure if he's a member here but I'd be interested in hearing experiences with the magnetic build plate. I'd like to be able to swap in different sheets. I've been using PEI with good results. Almost too good as I struggle to remove prints at times and wondering if I'm knocking the leveling off.

Very cool. I think I'd rather see a simplified bed leveling system. Using an aluminum plate is pretty good, but as you noted, knocking leveling off. If MG could, and I think they are, simplifying the mounting system of the build plate.

I would too. I'm going try this solution to handle the leveling. viewtopic.php?f=10&t=3167

I like the idea of the maghold flexibility because the tinkering is addictive. I've worked my way through plain glass, glue stick, hair spray, and PEI on my first roll of PLA. I've got wide array of filament that I'm interested in trying. Needless to say, I'm having a lot of fun. :D

i tried a spring steel sheet with buildtak just like that a long time ago. the problem is the same as with any flexible sheet type build platform........they dont remain flat. even the spring steel would bend and not be flat after just a print or two. generally speaking it stays flat but not to the degree of flatness that we need for 3d printing.

That's too bad. Thanks for the warning.

I'm the one who authored the link on first post.

The spring steel with neodymium magnet combo keeps the plate flat even after dozens of prints with no signs of change.

I have printed lots of objects with it since that post with no issues... It is really a great innovation and I can't see using a printer without one after having it.

Here is a complicated large print I recently made with the magnetic build plate http://www.thingiverse.com/thing:1202909 the 6th image over shows all the parts arranged on the maghold build plate. Nothing was warped and all fit perfectly. Not to mention those large parts popped off the flexible plate easily :) no more prying everything and messing up your bed leveling.

As long as you don't bend the spring steel past its elastic point and permanently deform it I don't see it ever getting worn out. The buildtak surface will have to be replaced long before the spring steel ever wears out.

I have no affiliation with the maker.

Cheers,
Chester
