Fusion 360 - Close off pipe end

Post by AndyB » Tue Jul 05, 2016 10:41 pm

Hello,

Using Fusion 360, how would I close off a pipe end?

Thank you.

Solution found:

Construct Offset Plane -> Select face (end of pipe)

Now you can create the plug:

9) Create Cylinder -> Make diameter of inside pipe -> .05 thickness

I would probably select the end face of the pipe, right click, select "create sketch" then select the inside circle and extrude it inward.

Whoops, didnt realize you answered your own question.

I would personally do it the Farrown3d way. You don't need to go creating construction planes, generally, if you have a flat face that is appropriate. Also, you should get used to using sketches and extruding them rather than using the Create cylinder/box tools as you will find them far more flexible in the future. Especially once you get into dimensioning/constraining them so you can make updates later by changing numbers rather than redrawing entire objects.

Also, if you're creating objects intended for 3D printing, .05mm is far too small of a thickness, the slicer won't even attempt to create a wall that thin. You'll want to stick to at least .4mm in the x/y plane, and multiples of your layer height (.1 to .2mm) in the Z plane.

Thank you for your suggestion, Farr0wn3d.

I tried that but that but it only extrudes the outer part of the inner circle face.

Thank you, jsc.

I'm using inches not mm.

The method I described has a problem, the cylinder at .05" is not thick enough, when I pulled the pipe off the platform the cylinder stuck to the platform as it broke away from the pipe. I suppose I need to make the cylinder thicker.

That's because you've created two separate objects, and the slicer will happily create a pipe and a cylinder just as you've modeled. You want them joined into a single body. You can either do that with your method by using the Combine tool, or when doing the sketch/extrusion method, make sure the operation is "join" and not "cut" or "new body".

By the way, when you extrude from a sketch, you have the option of selecting multiple closed areas by holding down alt (or swirly flower on a Mac) and clicking parts of the sketch.

Shouldn't this be in the Software section instead of Tech Support?

And shouldn't @jsc know that it's the "command" key? :P
