Bombs Away!

AN-M30_005.jpg
It took a few years but I finally took that page out of Jim's book so to speak. It's not as cool and epic as Jim's bomb as mine is only 1/4 scale but I'm very happy with how it came out. Much like Jim I had to model it form the few pictures and diagrams that are on the web. I originally modeled it to fit a 2" piece of PVC for the body (much like Jim did) to save printing time but ended up just printing the entire thing because it was small and only added another few hours of time for the middle body section.

I had to go with printed stencils for the lettering and because of the size I couldn't fit all of the writing on the casing but this is close enough for my liking.

I added a fun little love note on the side like the boys use to leave for Hitler in WWII.

I went with a nose fuse on mine just to add a little cool detail.

I also went with a different type of tail fuse (4 blade) just because it was easier to print.

A few more picture can be seen here if you're interested.

Anyway it was a fun project to model and print and I just wanna thank Jim for giving me the Idea. I might have to try a 500lb one next. (still 1/4 scale of course)
.

Thanks.... Here's all the pieces raw off the printer, there's not a lot to them but my best guess I'd say around 8-10 hours for everything. With the finish work I do I probably could print the body pieces at a higher layer height to speed things up but I never really print for speed anyway. Most of the parts were printed at .20 layer height.

great job. in my searches i was never really able to find any detail shots of the fuse in the nose or the detonator fan. i just had to sort of wing that. love the job you did on those pieces. i did find some schematics that had measurement callouts for alot of the parts which i was able to use to keep everything to 3/4 scale.

Encase you ever make another one here's what I found on the AN-M30 from a few field guides.

Fuzes
The AN-M30 Bomb is fuzed in the nose with the AN-M103 Fuze and in the tail with the AN-M100A2 Fuze. Alternate fuzes that may be used as substitutes or for special purposes are the M103, M118, or M119 Nose Fuzes, and the M112, M100, M106, or its modifications, or the AN-M100A1 Tail Fuzes.

Here's a link to a BOMB FUSE DATA pdf that was helpful in the design process. They don't show the AN-M100A1 (which looks like yours was modeled after with the 8 fins on the vane) but you already did a great job on that one.

I'm working on a 500LB AN-M64 next and found a lot more info on that one so hopefully I can make it closer to actual 1/4 scale than this one.

Very nice job! What did you use to design the replica?
