Partial Success, Partial Massive Fail

Post by Dave K » Sun Jun 22, 2014 3:14 am

An attempt at printing Amelia Earhart's flight suit as scanned by the Smithsonian. I printed it vertically, upside down, with a seam on the back of the suit, thinking that would give me the best looking print. I put some extra support going from bed to shoulders for stability but I didn't have the gap adjusted right and the model didn't actually touch much of the support.

The result...a nice print from collar to waist, then a tip-over and a rat's nest that should have been rest of the suit. At least the top part turned out OK. I'll try again after adjusting the gap.

The source link, if anyone is interested: https://3d.si.edu/browser. I've also printed Lincoln's life mask, which turned out very nicely.

Yeah, I'm keeping the jacket even if the second attempt works out. It looks almost like it was intended to be that way!

[Edit - Not sure there's any interest, but this is a better set of photos than I originally posted and it shows more of the detail.]

I set support vertical spacing to zero, which held the suit nicely so I didn't end up with a rat's nest. It detached very cleanly. Adjusting retraction and coasting made the seam in back much better, too. Not invisible but not noticeable unless you're looking for it.

6" from top to bottom. PET+, 0.200mm
