Can the M2 Power Supply stay on 24/7? What wattage is used?

Post by hybridprinter » Sun Feb 26, 2017 7:56 pm

Just wondering if the M2 Power Supply box can stay on all the time for days/months on end? Is it similar to a computer that is kept on 24/7?

Anybody know what wattage the M2 power supply draws (not printing) ?

An idling 24v supply draws 13W, 30VA.

Can it stay on 24/7 without damaging the power supply fan or anything?

eh the fan bearings eventually go out, then they're noisy, then they get quiet again if you leave them on long enough.

On a stock M2, there is no backwards link between the power supply and the RAMBo, so, no.

Driving a relay from a Raspberry Pi is the only way to do it -- but, that's an exercise left up to the reader. Why though, just to save the fan?

I use this to shut off my M2 when prints finish and I'm not around.

Works really well. Also, if you know when your print is going to finish you can set the smart plug timer to shut off shortly after.

Theses are great... I use the same ones on all three of my printers too. I was going to make something so when the bed dropped it just hits the switch on the power strip but after buying theses I have a power strip plugged into each one so everything for each Printer (power, lights, and pi) can all be shut down when done using the timer feature. If I know it's a 7 hour print I usually add and extra hour or so to the time just be sure. These save me from having to wake up in the middle of the night to turn everything off. Plus it's nice to be able to power everything up and them warm the beds (using pi) without having to run downstairs to the basement first.

but what if you turn the printer power off before the extruder gets under 50 C ? the extruder fan needs to stay running after a print job finishes to cool the extruder down right?
