Upgraded to E model and can't get Z to set correctly

Post by RBarrow » Sat Apr 29, 2017 11:16 am

I have read everything I.can find on this but for whatever reason there is no idiot proof step by step provided for this idiot on how to reset (and store) the Z height.

I installed the new 4 point bed and the bottom Z stop switch (had to actually cut part of the switch bracket off to get it to clear a screw so it would trigger the switch). I upd.ated the firmware and reversed the Z stop switch.

I downloaded the quick start app and the z zero does as it is supposed to....goes to the bottom and zeros.

The position reads in S3D as Z 200.

When I move to Z 0 it is still WAY down from the extruder...so I moved it up and have a reading of -14.1 mm which is the zero with the feeler gauge. Now how do I store this or what is my next step...the bed leveling part moves it back down and I am lost!

HELP...

So you're going through the quick-start bed level and bed height adjustments, but the starting height is not being saved? That's sorta' what it sounds like.

Seems like something isn't right yet in your upgrade, but regarding the Z-Offset, I have some of my findings in this thread: viewtopic.php?f=3&t=3631

The Z 200 is set in the firmware and the quick start program should set an offset in addition to that.

If your doing everything in the quick start program correctly it sounds like it's not saving the offset. You can try the stand alone z-height program and see if that works.
(Original Beta Link I'm not sure if there is a newer version though this is an old link I have.)

This has been a bit of adventure...

Received and installed the new bed as well as the new z-zero switch at the bottom. Looked pretty simple and actually wasn't difficult...but here are a few notes that might help the next person.

The bed leveling screws were set to different heights...which I did not catch until later. Once I determined this was the case, I backed them all out to flush and turn each of them in 5 turns so I had a common starting point.

The new bottom mounted z-zero bracket HITS a nut on the bottom of the spider which does not allow the switch to be activated. I had to cut away the part of the bracket to allow the nut to clear and everything was fine. I just took off about 1/2" of the top behind where the micro switch is mounted.

The bed clips on the corners if not positioned perfectly straight will hit the nuts on the bottom of the frame along the X axis (there is a row of nuts where the X track mounts to the frame at the top of the machine). Turning the clips to point along the long sides of the bed clears the nuts.

Once I figured all this out I was able to successfully run the quick start app. The only issue with the app is that when you are raising the bed to get to proper height, the 1mm adjustment stops working after 2 clicks....but the .1 mm adjustment allows you to hit it as many times as necessary. This was a PAIN and I think is a bug in the software.

Thanks for everyone's suggestions and for pointing me in the right direction! The machine is printing 100% better than before as now the bed height is spot on and not as subject to change...especially printing parts with lots of infill (vibration).

Thanks!
Roy
