Motion Sensor Housing

Post by zemlin » Mon Sep 04, 2017 9:39 pm

Not nearly as cool as an Aztec calendar, but perhaps a bit more useful ... :)

We picked up these exterior light fixtures a few weeks back to replace the old uglies flanking our garage door. They were deeply discounted, but we wanted motion sensing lights for that location.

The motion sensing options tended to be pretty ugly (by our taste), and quite a bit more expensive.

The Google helped me find a compact $12 motion sensing switch: http://www.vellemanusa.com/products/vie ... &id=525893
so I printed off a couple of ABS housings for the sensor. The switch fits in the box with the rest of the wiring.

I printed a drill guide as well, so I could clamp the drill guide to the lamp base and drill it out to match the tapped holes in the printed housings.
Worked out well..

Looks great! I will be interested to how well the ABS holds up to weather. Where do you live? We see -30F - 110F here, with plenty of sun and medium to high humidity.

I was wondering what material you used. I had to make some fence brackets for my daughter, and ended up using PETG. I read that PET holds up very well outdoors, but later found info that PETG isn't quite as rugged. My guess is that she will move before they deteriorate, and if they break, I'll print just some new ones. Maybe by then they will have sturdier materials.

I have some ASA lying around, but I have not yet tried to print it. It is supposed to be UV resistant.

That is less than $30/kg. Seems pretty reasonable to me...

Sorry, I didn't realize the spool was that huge. I didn't know they even made them that big. I'm not sure how well it will fit on the standard MakerGear spool holder, and if it did, I'm not sure it wouldn't just tip the whole printer over.

A quick search shows that it is widely available in 1 kg spools for only a little more than PETG or PLA goes for. There's even somebody on eBay selling it for $20 a spool, but who knows what the quality is like.

I noticed they recommend runningthe heated bed at ~ 110C or hotter for ASA. Will the MakerGear get that hot?
