Benchy quality issues.

Post by Expresso » Tue Oct 10, 2017 8:44 pm

Hello,

A couple of days ago I decided to print a Benchy just for fun and noticed that the quality of the print was not very good. Specifically, the hull of the boat had some issue, I was expecting the hull to be nice and smooth but that is not the case. Please check out the pictures below:

I am currently using an M2 Rev E with factory configuration and practically zero wear and tear (I don't use the printer that much so its pretty much new, its still on its very first spool). The Benchy was printed using MakerGear PLA (Black in this case) and Simplify 3D (both simplify 3D version 3 or 4 create the same issue). I don't fully recall but I believe that the stl was downloaded from here: https://www.thingiverse.com/thing:763622

Could someone give me some tips on how to achieve a better Benchy print? Or is this as best as its going got get?

Than you.

Usually those problems on a Benchy indicate a cooling problem. How was the boat orientated on the platform? Try positioning the front towards the front of the printer were the fan is (if it wasn't) and see if that helps.

Print it slower, cooler, and with a lower layer height (0.1mm).

WOW that looks identical to what I have printed with my brand new M2 Rev. E. It cannot be a coincidence. Are you using standard M2 S3D profile? I think it's something with settings in that profile...

If I remember correctly the last time I printed one I noticed that the front of the boat was using bridging due to settings. Check for bridging on the preview.

Oh boy, I can't believe it took me this long before I had a chance to come back and followup on this thread.

OK, so I followed the advice and printed a new boat this time by orienting the print so that the front of the boat was pointing towards the printer fan. I am happy to report that the front of the boat now looks much better, however, now the back of the boat looks much worse:

So I suppose I can continue tweaking this and that on the printer but my question now is, why is it that when
  • using a MakerGear printer (practically new with all original parts).
  • using MakerGear filament.
  • using MakerGear recommended software (Simplify 3D).
  • using MakerGear provided Simplify 3D profile.
  • etc.
in other words, everything comes from MakerGear.... Why is the part not printing adequately? I am not expecting perfection but I am certainly expecting something decent all the way around.

Could it be that perhaps a sensor is not working correctly? Or is this the way things are and nothing can be done about it?

Thanks.

I found this post trying to troubleshoot my own benchy issues on the M2. I couldn't find much information, so I finally buckled down and did a lot of test prints. I wrote it up here: http://www.usrsb.in/m2.html

Good quality prints are possible, but it does take some elbow grease.

tldr: Here are the final settings I landed on, but it's probable that yours will be a bit different.

Layer Height: 0.2 mm
Infill: 20%
Layer 1 Temperature: 205F
Layer 3+ Temperature: 190F
Bed Temperature: 70F
Print Speed: 40 mm/s
Outline Underspeed: 50%
X/Y Axis Movement Speed: 200 mm/s
First Layer Speed: 30%
Unsupported area threshold: 20 sq mm
