Quieter Fans
Re: Quieter Fans
I'm guessing they probably haven't changed the power supply much since the Rev' D's but the best thing to do is just crack open the case and see whats written on the fan that's in there now.... and replace it with a Noctua of the same size/voltage.

Re: Quieter Fans
how do you actually open the PSU?
It's almost like my cover is cemented on lol. I unscrewed the sides, and then tried the bottom when that didnt work.
The lid is impossible to remove.
I wanna swap the fan to a noctua
edit - talking about the black case. I can't even get inside of it. it's like it's glued shut

Re: Quieter Fans
Does yours have the plastic outer shell or is it metal?

metal - turns out top screws were covered by the warning stickers, so we're good now. I feel very stupid lol

Something about that sentence appeals to me as a maker.

Ok - all figured out.
Holy moly that's a quiet power supply unit now haha

Re: Quieter Fans
what is the end result of everyone's testing with Dampers?
I just installed them on another machine of mine and now all you hear is the power supply fan!
I would like to install them on the M2, but see there were a few who removed them, what is the consensus?
Would you recommend I install them, if so which size, and on which steppers?
thanks!

Re: Quieter Fans
I have them installed on X and Y. I have thin washers as shims on the outboard screws (one on the motor, one on the damper) which causes the motor shaft to lean out a touch when loose. I then tension the belt until it runs centered in the motor sprocket indicating the shaft is perpendicular to the belt line.psd wrote:what is the end result of everyone's testing with Dampers?

I've done test prints with and without to see if the reduced rigidity of the axis drives impacts ringing on the parts and could see no difference at all in the prints with and without the dampers.
Re: Quieter Fans
Thanks,
I did not understand where you put the washers or why?
What size dampers do we need?
NEMA 17?
Did you do it to all 3 motors?

I only installed them on the X and Y axes. Z doesn't do enough to be a noise maker.
Figure the dampers are a rubber spacer between the motor and the machine. If the motor is square to the frame when mounted, applying tension to the belt will cause the motor to lean into the belt and the shaft is no longer normal to the machine frame.
I installed thin washers on the outboard screws - one of the outboard screw locations with the washer is circled in the photo above. The washer causes the motor shaft to point slightly outward from the belt line. The reaction to the belt tension causes the motor to lean into the belt which moves the motor shaft into a normal orientation to the machine frame and belt line.
