What are your default print speeds in S3D?

Post by pcenginefx » Sat Aug 15, 2015 11:02 pm

Hi all,

Did a search and didn't really see many posts on this, but all I want to know are people's successful default print speeds with the M2+S3D (please post in mm/min!)

I recently went from the S3D default of 4800 mm/min to 6800 mm/min and while it seems really fast to me, I'm still getting great quality w/PLA @ 0.2mm.

Thanks,

Change your S3D to mm/sec so it uses sane values. mm/min makes sense for subtractive CNC but not 3D printers.

I run 100mm/sec for PLA (2.36220472 × 10-7 seconds per gigainch, if you want to use SANE values. imperial ftw), 80mm/sec for ABS, 60mm/sec for PETG, and 40mm/sec for NinjaFlex. These are on a v4 hotend.

Oh thank you! I didn't know that you could change S3D to mm/sec....just changed it.

Keeping with my current speed, I'm now reporting at 113.3mm/sec for my PLA speed, but want to know if this is considered too fast or if anyone is running higher than this with success?

From what im told current controller boards can only handle up to 100mm/sec with normal steps. Beyond that it will start double stepping, triple and so on depending in how fast your printing. So basically on the electronics side of thing you will start losing quality. That was from one of the writers of sailfish.

Ah ok - I'll keep it at 100mm/sec then if that is the case. I don't want to push any part of the printer to the limit as my current M2 has been performing perfectly, but I did want to see if I could speed things up at all as I've been running it at default S3D speed till a few days ago.

much like a traditional printer, you can have settings for draft copies; super fast but rough around the edges. or you can slow things down to produce nice quality.

100 mm/s huh? For PLA, I've printed at 100 on DeltaMaker deltas, but nominal is 60. Prints often suffer at 100, so I generally go 60 give or take depending on the geometry.

Anybody else wanna chime in? TIA...

Haha, just noticed this thread is over 2 yrs old. Guess I'll search the board, and other places for more recent discussions...

For PLA, 100 for fast drafts, 80 in general, 60-70 for complex.

50-60% speed for first layer and outer perimeters.
I'm finally back to where I started two days ago!

A thread with some stuff in it I update every once in a while. viewtopic.php?f=8&t=9

Thx, Will, for the input. Your numbers seem reasonable from my experience.

Here’s an interesting analysis of actual print speeds (along w/ other aspects of printing). ‘Printing Speed’ is 50 mm/s, but the histogram shows most of the time the speed it 25 followed closely by 40. Avg. speed reported at 28.9. BTW, I found (in this one test) the G-Code Analyser (http://www.gcodeanalyser.com) was MUCH closer than S3D, or gcode.ws (http://www.gcode.ws). (Note: gcode.ws is generally better than S3D). G-Code Analyser takes into account acceleration, and jerk. I managed to get most of the required data using M503. OK, there you have it: food for thought. Feedback is welcomed…
