Travel speed: 300mm/s. Too fast?

Post by Swami » Sat Dec 30, 2017 3:22 am

From Simplify3D profile provided by Makergear. Have delta printer that's set to half that speed. So, is it OK? Or what? Can too fast cause layer shift (due to missed step, perhaps)? TIA.

Probably "or what", because it depends very much on your hardware configuration. Delta printers tend to be loose and floppy compared to rugged Cartesian printers, so they must run slower. You'll find exceptions on both sides of the comparison:
  • Delta pick-n-place material handlers run at blazing speeds
  • Allthread-based Cartesian printers shudder uncontrollably at high speeds
I've been running rapids at 450 mm/s = 27000 mm/min for the last few years, but only after painstakingly (pronounced "neurotically") verifying the firmware and hardware were capable of working reliably:

In real life, travel (non-printing) speed doesn't make much difference in overall time-to-finish, because printing speeds will be much lower.

If you're worried about reliability, slow down.
