M2 octoprint on Pi what to buy

Post by airscapes » Fri May 11, 2018 12:34 am

So what to buy.. Pi 3B, would go for the B+ but apparently the software does not work with the B+ yet..

So for hardware I need Pi 3B, Case, power supply, what is needed for a cam and what cam is the best for a small enclosure.. any other hardware needed? Assume the pi connects to the M2 with a USB cable?

Thanks!

Ok.. so B+ is supported as of a couple of days ago.. nothing like Beta testing  https://discourse.octoprint.org/t/new-o ... -15-0/1570
and I want to install octopi preconfigured package, correct? Any other hardware needed? Cam recommendations?

This contain everything I need or is there something else? https://www.amazon.com/V-Kits-Raspberry ... +pi+3+b%2B

One of those starter kits off Amazon is fine along with the Raspi cam. My Pi and printers are connected to each other through an ethernet or wireless hub. I think mine are all Canakit Raspi kits, which I got from Amazon.

I have three Raspi. Two use MotioneyeOS as print monitor cams and one uses Octoprint as the printer driver.

If you are using the camera, it is nice to have a small LED light shining on the printer so you can have the room lights off, but still see what is happening.

I also designed a case and camera mount for the Canakit setup. https://www.thingiverse.com/thing:1316628
I'm finally back to where I started two days ago!

You probably don't need to buy a plastic case for your 3D Printer's web controller...

So maybe I should ask.. can you monitor and control with one Pi? The ribbon cable kind of sucks for creative installations.. I don't really want the CPU mounted in my enclosure..
Will the Motioneye0S work with a USB webcam or just he PI camera module?

You can monitor and control with Octoprint with a single Pi it's an all in one package. You also do not have to use the Pi camera if you don't like the ribbon cable there are tons of USB web cams that work with it. (I pretty sure there is a list of cams that work in the Octowiki. Octoprint has a bunch of other plug ins too.. like the ability to turn on and off smart plugs which is nice so you can shut down automatically after a print.

MotioneyeOS is more of a security system but it does work with either the PI camera or USB cams. (you can actually run both at the same time.)

Just placed my order for a 3B+, 32Gig Micor sd and a logitech C270 which seems to be a popular 3d printer monitor cam once it is opened up and focused for up close viewing.
Found a couple of cases on thingivers that should work well enough. I did see that adifruite has 2 meter cables for the PI cam but I think the $20 web cam will suffice.
Thanks for the input guys, I am sure I will have more questions as next weeks rolls by.

As mentioned you can do both monitoring and running with Octoprint.

To clarify my situation, I have an M2 with a dedicated computer that I run off a KVM switch. It just needs a watcher, so I use MotionEyeOS.

I have an MPCNC that runs solo on Octoprint for 3D printing and laser engraving. I also have another Motioneyes system as the cam for it.
This was a situation where I just ended up with an extra Pi and wanted to use it. I also wanted to minimize the chance of anything software or hardware related interfering with either the video or machine operation when using the laser engraver for safety’s sake.

As Insta put it, you can always print your own case, so don’t need something like the Canakit that includes a case. I bought one as my first Raspi kit just to make things easy since I was not sure what I was getting into at the time. Once I had one and had designed a nice case holder, camera holder, and mount system for it, I just kept getting them!
I'm finally back to where I started two days ago!

Thanks Will! So I also have a dedicated laptop but hate seeing the printer come to a stop for a second or 2 when windows is busy doing something else or rebooting to install a patch without telling me... and the task of switching the SD card back and forth is also a annoying.. So it was recommended to go the Pi route which if it works as described should be a good compromise.. sill need the laptop to extract and install filament and stop start a print in front of the printer but all the rest of the stuff can be done from my desktop I use for work all day, which is nice!

I was going to install the reconfigured Octopi image and am wondering if is what you all did or if you just use the full linux distro for the pi and install Octoprint and whatever else is needed?
