Patent Pending

Post by Capt. John » Mon Nov 17, 2014 11:28 pm

62080595 is my patent pending number for a new fishing spoon with a reinforced outer perimeter.

This only was made possible with jimc's design work with my tweaks to get the lure action
topnotch. This is a huge leap forward and I have a year to file for a full utility patent.

Cost to do this was around a grand with a web based company, thoughtstopaper.com
Could have be done a little cheaper, but I selected their all inclusive pro package where
they handled the drawing and engineer geek-speak language to file.

Printed out my first spoons in May of this year, 6 month later after exhaustive water trials
with at least 5 different versions with sub tweaks, came up the winning combination.
The only way this spoon could be perfected was thru 3D printing where several sizes and geometry
to fine tune the design. I have 2 injection twin cavity molds being made, one with a 4.0" spoon and another with a 4.65".
This new concept in a fishing spoon will debut on my websites around this Thanksgiving and
just had to share this project with the member's here, who's advice brought me up to speed.

ABS was my first attempt, too brittle, pulled the eyelet hole on 3 spoons and never landed a fish.
Once again, Mr. jimc needs another thank you for recommending PET+ and settings for my 3vb hotend.
Spoons got stronger and started catching, then it was up to underwater videoing to make final checks
on the movement-action of the lure/spoons. I will post links to 2 of my soon to debut YouTube videos
where it's proven beyond any shadow of doubt these spoons are the reel deal!

Learned a lot about accuracy of the M2, had 2 SLAs made, at 60 some bucks each.
Almost identical to the printed out parts, minus the layer lines.

Future projects, no SLAs will be required seeing how good the M2 does.

Goal all along was to develop fishing tackle when I purchased my printer.
This way, several shapes can be water tested and a reasonable price.
This has been a wonderful ride so far, and it's just the beginning.
It's fun to make useful nicknacks, but it;s more "fun-er" to make money.
This opens the horizon to more products.

Once again, thanks to all members that helped me out and
even if you didn't? ...your posts pre-answered any questions that did come up.

What a resource this board is!

Completed and published 2 videos to YouTube about my new spoons.

This 5 minute video shows the underwater action in side by side lure tests
http://youtu.be/Z027WHoVqB8?list=UUW-k8 ... z-_RHrpEwg

Here's an 8 minute video showing the spoon catch fish during the 2014 season:

Kinda hate to see this phase be completed. Designing things, tweaking lures
is the fun part and extra interesting that pulls me in whole hog.

Now comes the work part as this spoons will soon be in full production.
The "work part" is not overly appealing when you're 68 looking at 69 years old.

I created a 2 page article to introduce my new Salmon Buster spoons to the world
that might need a little more proof reading at:

1st test run of my new injection molded spoons:

My printing efforts are at manufacturing and prototyping with my M2.
Numbers on the spoon designate which side of the 2 cavity molds the parts came out of.

Pic is outstandingly clear polycarb Lexan™ from the 1st 20 parts that were born out of my new molds.
Lens quality diamond polish is why the spoons are so ultra clear. Diamond polish
is not a standard finish for molded parts and it's a 2k cost upgrade.

I marvel at the real 3D printing artists that are members of this board and sometimes wonder
if they shouldn't be working in Hollywood, or for the CIA.

I owe jimc large for his advice and design wizardry. He picked up this project when
the original CAD designer backed out and left my high and dry last July.

Above 1 year ago to this date is when the 3D printing urge took charge ...and now
1 year later, I have a new patented fishing spoon in 2 sizes. I thank the higher
powers for giving me the wisdom to purchase the rock solid M2!

I'd be lying, if I didn't say how envious of the art work seen on this board that
blows my skills away.

My art is devoted making fishing tackle that's provided me a living for the past 32 years.

The below photo would NEVER have happened, if I wasn't able to rapid prototype
several versions of a spoon, then get an injection mold made.

Mask was used for the dots, USA made $30 Paasche H series air brush with a 3 tip.
These are rock solid siphon fed air brushes that can hold a lot of paint for production uses.
Some of my Paasches are over 10 years old with the original parts, spraying gallons of paint.

Lure tape is USA, lure eye, and so are the split rings.
Paint is Duplicolor lacquer, pretty sure this paint is USA too.
Hooks are made in France from iron ore mined in the alps.

Ha, I know what you mean. I'm always tinkering with new inventions and keep thinking, you know, if one of these ever succeeds I'll be stuck putting all my time into just making this one thing and then no more time for inventing new things! I really just like the R&D side of it.

Put off those provisional patents as long as you can, since once you do it the clock is ticking and you know how fast a year can go by.

What is it costing for the final injection molded production? Do you have your own molding machine or are you farming that whole operation out?
Experience is what you get when you didn't get what you wanted.

2 injection molds, 2 cavities for each size, both were pushing 20k.
These are the least costly molds I've had made to date.
These are not large molds, handling a spoon 4.65 inches and other is around 3.85 inches.

Figure to shift to a full patent within the year, big difference in cost is why I didn't
go full patent from the beginning.

That's what makes the M2 such a great bargain. It perfects a part
long before it's ever cut into a mold. These spoons would have been impossible
doing traditional SLAs for 2 reasons. Time to get pro made SLAs and abilty to mod on the fly.
SLA stands for stereolithography.

Here's a wiki explaning SLAs:
"Although stereolithography can produce a wide variety of shapes, it has often been expensive;
the cost of photo-curable resin has long ranged from $80 to $210 per liter,
and the cost of stereolithography machines has ranged from $100,000 to more than $500,000."
Kinda like what we do, but a zillion times the expense!

Kruger Plastics in Bridgman, MI does the injection work on a price per part basis.
