M2 bed warm up time to 110C for ABS

Post by sprior » Thu Apr 24, 2014 3:05 am

I'm planning to try printing ABS for the first time tonight on my M2 and so far the bed has been warming up for 30-40 minutes and still hasn't made 110C, it's still only around 105C. What's the normal amount of time for warm up to 110C?

Actually it's not going above 105 at all, the temperature has stopped rising. The 110C is the default bed temp for ABS in S3D - is it wrong?

shouldnt take that long at all. you dont have any major air movement near the printer do you? fan etc? or is it in a cold environment?

No noticeable air movement at all, but the room temp is 60F.

hmmm 60 is a bit cold. not sure how well it would heat up in a colder climate like that. maybe others have some input on it. normally to hit 110 should be about 15-20min. on another note, even if you got your bed up to temp, a 60deg room isnt going to do nice with abs.

I have a Mosaic that sometimes never gets to 90C bed temp. I have found that a few sheets of folded paper laid on the build plate will shorten the time to set temp. If you're afraid of the paper bursting into flames, perhaps a silicone pot holder or something else more heat resistant.

Starting to work with Rick on this, not sure how this will end up though I'm confident in the service I'll get. At first I guess it'll depend on what are the expectations for the heater though since the machines are built in a warehouse in Ohio I suspect 60F isn't out of the question crazy operating conditions for them (though I do understand that an enclosure would be required for good ABS printing results).

So if it's agreed that the bed should be able to warm up to 110C in these conditions we'll just have to troubleshoot from there. I think getting the expected resistance of the heater and measuring mine should be an early thing to check.

When you watch the bed temp on the chart in Creator, does it do anything unusual? For instance does it warm up for a while then suddenly drop?

That first warmup seems to have been a fluke. What I saw that night was once the bed temp got over about 80C the rate of increase got slower and slower and after about 40 minutes it just wasn't going up anymore and hovering at 105C.

The next day and ever since it gets all the way to 110C in about 15-17 minutes.

Unless it was some kind of initial break in we've got no clue what happened. The room temp was almost identical, there were no cooling fans actively cooling the bed, and it's an insulated basement room with no A/C vents to provide a draft.

All I can say is that it works now.
