No one mentioned using the previewer in S3D.
I now always do a quickly slide up and down to look for any surprises in my print. In some cases, I'm looking for the best orientation of the part to be printed. I generate gcode, look at the combination of supports and skirts, and decide, nope, that way is not gonna work and try again. I can also verify if I'm getting solid layers when I want. Some of the configuration parameters for infill are not intuitive, so I can try a couple variations, until I get the density of infill I'm looking for. A quick preview of the initial prints of the object in question in this thread, would have quickly shown that the bottom of the cylinder was not flat against the build surface.
