M3 Reviewed in Make Magazine

Post by Tim » Sun Nov 12, 2017 2:39 am

The MakerGear M3 got a nice writeup in this month's issue of Make Magazine. Unfortunately, they graded all of the printers solely on performance metrics on various torture test prints, which is kind of beside the point because apart from a few things like a stable frame and gantry, it's mostly just measuring the quality of the slicer software. Which means that the top score went to a printer that is closed-source software/firmware/hardware. The M3 did respectably well on the tests; it's just clustered near the top with a bunch of other printers that all run more or less the same electronics and firmware toolchain. I'd prefer a more Consumer Reports-like approach where "ease of use" and other qualitative metrics add to the final score. But you can get the general gist of it by reading the writeup that goes along with the tests and scores. They really had only good things to say about the M3, not that anyone who regularly reads or posts to this forum is going to be surprised by that. But we have noted the lack of MakerGear's presence in the Make Magazine 3D printer issue in the last couple of years and we had even speculated that if MakerGear would just change the "2" to a "3" they would get more press coverage, and this seems to prove the point.
