you could of course the slicer would have to be smart enough to build gcode to do that

I guess by itself a single wall of filament jutting out from a model is not very useful. I can vaguely imagine complex maneuvers involving several layers where a shape is built up that has finer resolution than the .8mm you get with the perimeter method. But that method is so easy to program it's no wonder it's what all the slicers do.

I've seen Slic3r do that on rounded shape with a tail (think of an elongated paisley): as the tail became thinner, the number of perimeter threads decreased, ending with a single thread extending along the tail from one side of the paisley. But that was a long time ago and probably a corner case in the slicing logic.

Making it happen on a regular basis is, of course, a simple matter of software... [grin]
