M2 rev.E - black z motor leadscrew pitch?

Post by SIERRA086 » Sun Nov 04, 2018 12:04 am

I see the firmware sets the steps per mm to 1007.7 at 1/16th microstepping and I’m extremely curious as what exact leadscrew pitch produces this. What is this weird leadscrew?

Using the prusa calculators and playing with numbers, it seems to me that this leadscrew is it has a 3.17555 pitch (this produces the 1007.7 steps per mm at 1/16 stepping).

Am I right about this?

The reason for my asking is I’ve just converted my M2 rev.E to use a duet WiFi and The last remaining item holding me up is the steps per mm for the z axis.

If you read this thank you in advance for taking the time!

So to update on my issue: It’s the original marlin firmware from makergear for the M2 rev.E that sets the z steps per mm at 1007.7, 1/16 microstepping (just in case that was unclear).

To get my new duet WiFi board working at 1/128 microstepping I used a value of 8061.6 steps per mm for the z axis. I did a test print and it’s working just fine, however I’m still not seeing where they derived the original 1007.7 steps per mm from. I looked and can’t find a leadscrew anywhere that has a pitch to generate that value.

Betcha the 3.17555 mm pitch is really 3.1750 mm = 1/8 inch pitch = 8 TPI, which gives 1007.9 step/mm with a 1:16 microstep motor.

If the US-of-A had gone metric, back in the day, we wouldn't even have 1/8 inch leadscrews to kick around …

I bet you are exactly right, just for the heck of it I’ll adjust the steps per mm slightly to align with that value and give it a try to see what happens. Thanks for the reply Ed, good to see you are still around the forum here.

SIERRA086 can you share any details of your upgrade? I'm actually thinking of doing the same with my RevE, just trying to see whats in store for me. Any pictures of the upgrade process?

thank you

alex

Hey Alex. I’ll get you a couple pics tonight, it was dead simple, especially if you have worked with duet electronics in the past. I still have to design and print a new cover for the duet but to mount the board I designed and printed two very simple adapter rails. The adapter rails allow the duet to sit right where the Rambo board was. As for connecting everything - most items plugged right in, I think I only had to add connectors to two fans. The only other thing was converting the power supply to work with the duet. To do that I cut off the Rambo power supply connector then bonded the three positives and then the three negatives together and soldered them to a xt90 connector. I created a short pigtail on the duet side with the other half of the xt90 connector.

To add to this the M2 is now MUCH more quiet when running, No more excess motor noise. The loudest thing is the psu.

Here’s some pics of how the DuetWiFi is installed right now, please excuse the rats nest of wiring and the velcro band holding the wiring down. I had a hotend thermistor issue unrelated to the duet upgrade so I’m waiting on the replacement to arrive from Makergear, when I’m back operational again I plan on designing and printing a proper protective cover for the duet.

Thank you. I didn't work with duet before but it seems doable.

Btw you can replace PSU fan. I replaced mine with Noctua and its much quieter now.

what is the blue 3d part for?

It’s definitey doable - if you decide to do it PM me and I can help by providing my configuration files for the duet. Also - I worked last night on the design for the duet cover, once that’s complete I’ll put the mounting adapters and the cover on thingiverse.

Can you link me to the noctua fan you used for your psu?

The blue part in the pics is a z stage helper spring, I’ve been using it for the past year and a half, it just seems to help the z stage recover from a homing move to z max a little easier. The idea isn’t mine but I saw it on thingiverse and modified the design slightly then printed it. I just looked and can’t locate the original design but I can upload the one I made if anyone is interested.

Yep, thinking of getting the duet ethernet board to try out.

This is the fan I used https://www.amazon.com/gp/product/B009N ... UTF8&psc=1
60mmx25mm.
Only red and black wires are used. Just splice to existing connector. Fan fits right in and barely hear it. Also PSU fan is 12v unlike other fans which are 24v so noctua will work just fine.

if you can upload the z spring. Never seen it before.
