Extruder Calibration Issues
Extruder Calibration Issues
Current factory set settings:
Nozzle diameter: .35
Extrusion multiplier: .90
Extrusion width: Manual, .40
Filament Diameter: 1.65 (original set at 1.75, I measured and changed this)
Single perimeter wall
20x20x2 square from calibration how to
E:215C, GB:70C (EDIT)
At these settings the calibration square prints with a wall thickness of .25-.26
40/25 * .9 = 1.44
I change the settings and re-print a couple times to dial it in and I come up with 1.3-1.35 multiplier gets me a .40 single wall thickness.
I also change 1st layer to 100% to check the z height calibration and adjust the z offset until I get 2mm.
I get it so the calibration square prints perfect but I try to print a part and the quality sucks and just does not print well in general

Re: Extruder Calibration Issues
your temp seems low, I used to print pla at 220. maybe that would help?
Seems very weird.

My mistake, using the 215C that is recommended for PLA. Also this is the MG PLA that comes with the printerMatt_Sharkey wrote:your temp seems low, I used to print pla at 220. maybe that would help?

Re: Extruder Calibration Issues
what are you settings for specific extrusion widths like infil, perimeter, first layer, etc. Not just the general extrusion width of 0.40
Re: Extruder Calibration Issues
I bought the M2 fully assembled and have already going through one spools worth of PLA with successful prints (couple scrap due to lifting, but that expected). Am I looking at this the wrong? Its not "broke" why fix it? Just because the calibration print is off...

Layer Height: .10 - .30Matt_Sharkey wrote:what are you settings for specific extrusion widths like infil, perimeter, first layer, etc. Not just the general extrusion width of 0.40
Perimeter: 2 for parts, 1 for square
1st layer height: 90% for parts, 100% for square
1st layer width: 100%
1st layer speed: 50%
infill width: 100%
Re: Extruder Calibration Issues
When you say the quality "sucks", what exactly does that mean? Could be a number of things depending on what sucks.
Are you sure about your 1.65mm filament diameter? That seems quite low, and changing filament diameter has a larger proportional effect on extrusion than changing the multiplier.

I cancelled the print before it was done, but I'll describe what its like.
Sucks: rough outside surface finish (layer height of .10mm), outside wall seems to sag rough top layer.
As for the filament diameter. I am using a Brown & Sharpe Interapid 8"/200mm caliper that is within its calibration date. I get 1.62mm-1.65mm consistently. But I am all for double checking, so I got a different caliper, Brown & Sharpe Interapid 12"/300mm caliper within calibration date and get a measurement of 1.75mm. I also used a Starrett 0-1" mic (no calibration date) and get .069 inches which converts to 1.7526mm. I should also mention ambient air temperature is ~23C.
This has to be the issue. This just goes to show that the accuracy of your measuring tools is very important. I will adjust the diameter and try again. Thanks
Re: Extruder Calibration Issues
Measure the outside jaws of one caliper with the inside jaws of the other and see if they disagree.
Massive over-extrusion of 30% will cause a rough surface.

It's very easy to accidentally press that little tare button on digital calipers while reaching for the off button. Then from that point on - everything is way off.Alloy wrote:...I get 1.62mm-1.65mm consistently.
