WOW!

I did the damper modification and I am BLOWN AWAY by how quiet the machine is now! I never realized how loud it actually was.

Once done, the fans seemed really loud, so I removed the laser cut "M2" part of my case lid and replaced the fan with a Noctua fan and installed a metal fan guard.

My machine went from measuring 62-65 decibels down to 42! Now I can't even hear it from the next room.

Even though I'm really enjoying the peace since my M2 sits only five feet away from me while I work, I do miss it "singing" to me! I always thought the moves sounded a bit like machine music.

That's OK though, I think I'm over it!

I installed these as well....

Interestingly enough, I totally missed that they had one side with threaded holes, so I think I put them in upside down... and had a tweezer holding a small nut in place until I could pull it tight...
(I will fix that next time I am doing maintenance on the machine... I am planning on installing the bracket for the induction sensor this weekend, so it'll be then).

I also changed out both 40mm fans for Noctua fans, as so many others have done, and it has really done a great job on the machine.
Lastly, I upgraded both my electronics box and my PSU to a metal enclosure, and while doing so, I also went inside the PSU and replaced the VERY noisy fan inside with another Noctua. WOW! What a difference!

Only time my machine really can be heard from the next room is when the z axis drops a few centimeters when it moves across the platform to extrude and wipe, before start of print

My fiancée used to be annoyed and more or less wouldn't allow me to print over night since she was annoyed with the high pitch squeal from the steppers, but now... you can't even hear it if you are listening after it!

What size is the fan inside the 24v power supply? It's now the noisiest part of the machine.

I just checked, it's a 60mm 12v fan. This should be the correct replacement, I'll know for sure on Tuesday.

I might sound like a wisenheimer but in my opinion the damper should be bend by the belt tension. Can you imagine that a slight angle on the pulley would move the belt upwards? Furthermore I guess most of the noise is produced by the turning point of the belt.

Please tell me: Isnt this damper bend by the belt tension? I would guess the belt tension moves the stepper into a slight angle. The belt should be scratching at the top end of the pully. When the tension is so low that the stepper tilt is not an issue the backslash from the bell might be.

Yeah, i guess i accidentally tested it. When i put mine in, not knowing what i was doing, i didn't do it the way the rest of the guys did. I came down through the damper into the motor itself with some longer screws, compressing the rubber gasket and making the belt and the motor rock-solid and completely stable. Belt tension is actually firmer than it was before i put in the dampers.

It does cut down on the noise significantly, maybe not as much as if the motor were dangling freely from the rubber gasket, but it really cuts way down on the movement of the machine when the nozzle makes short rapid movements. It doesn't bounce around anymore, and the "ringing" with rapid direction changes has pretty much gone away. No more thunking sound either when it moves too rapidly. (I can't hear it from the kitchen anymore while i'm cooking and i have to keep coming in to check to see if it's still running.)

So after printing with it that way for the last week, i think i'm going to leave it alone. I might have gotten lucky, but i'll take good luck any day!

i am thinking, if your going to do that, you might be as equally served by using the cork spacers/dameners instead. and those you can make yourself from cork sheets from you local arts supply / hobby store.
