Ticking noise while printing.

Post by JLM » Fri Sep 18, 2015 1:05 am

This is my first print with the M2. ( Tracks for model ) Very happy with the printer so far.
My concern is that during the printing process there was a ticking noise coming from the extruder area. It sounds like the fan blades just nicking the fan enclosure. (fast ticking noise, but it only does it when it is doing the 100% infill on the first and last 3 layers of the print.
I am using a V4 hot end with pla filament. Simplify 3d
Print temperatures:
Extruder 215 heat bed 70
I purchased my printer pre assembled.
If the tension on the filament is to little will it sound like fast ticking if the drive gear is spinning out on the filament?
Any suggestions would be appreciated. I just don't want to ruin anything by keeping on printing.
thanks for your time

not to worry you wont hurt anything. sounds like the extruder is skipping some steps. it does not hurt a stepper motor at all to do this. ok, couple reasons it could do this. #1 your printing or extruding faster than the printer can melt the material. #2 too low temp. #3 nozzle has partial clog. #4 tension too tight. #5 filament dia out of spec and too large. i have a feeling your a combination of #1 and 2 so go into s3d in the other tab. solid infill under speed. bring that down to 60-80% and your print speed should be around 4000-4800. bump your temp up to 220-225.

Thanks for the advice jimc,
I think you nailed it. I turned down solid infill speed to 75% and print speed to 4600 and extruder temperature 220.
I heard a tick once in a while but nothing like before.
I am going to double check filament dia and tension screw pressure tomorrow.
Thanks again.......
