OctoPrint... thoughts?
Re: OctoPrint... thoughts?
Octoprint is awesome. I started using it in the last couple of months. The distro that I downloaded didn't require me to do anything other than copy the files onto the SD card. The Raspi camera worked automagically. The only thing that I wish they would fix is for Octoprint to automatically reconnect with the printer when the printer is turned off, then on. When I turn my printer on, I have to go to the Octoprint console and click "disconnect", then "connect". Not a huge burden, but a small flaw in a nearly flawless program.

Nice! thanks Vandal!
Re: OctoPrint... thoughts?
I love Octopi the remote viewing is worth it alone. I print a lot over night so if I wake up in the middle of the night I just take a quick peak at my phone or tablet to make sure everything is going good and if not I can stop the print right there without having to get out of bed.
It's pretty easy to setup too... Just watch This Video and you'll be good to go. I didn't like the ribbon on the pi camera so I went with a normal USB web camera but Octopi works with a lot of UBS web cams without any additional setup. I don't leave the house if I'm printing so I can only watch the cam if I'm connected to my network at home but even if you can shut the printer down from somewhere else if say something catchers on fire... something is still on fire after you shut it down
so unless your home good luck with that.
I originally when the Octoprint route because I needed to run two printers at the same time and you can't do that with S3D and one computer so I run one from there and the other through Octopi... Overall though I think it was worth the money, even if I only did have the one printer I'd still run it.

Re: OctoPrint... thoughts?
perhaps FIRE is a bad example, because youre right, if its already on fire, I'm fucked lol what I'm thinking about specifically is a mosfet failure, its been on my mind since ed mentioned it and now Im back to not leaving the house with a print going, so what I'm thinking is that I could monitor temps while I'm gone and if things get ugly I can either shut it down or as a last resort, have a wifi plug in to cut the power entirely
Re: OctoPrint... thoughts?
I do all my prints from Octoprint, running on a raspberry Pi.
The octopi distribution is very simple to install onto the raspberry, and very easy to maintain. Basically it is plug and play
You can run octoprint from an old pc, an old mac or whatever, but since a raspberry pi is increadibly cheap and also consuming very little power, I have opted for a pi.
I use the on board camera. My pi is mounted on the wall behind the printer, so I only get the "behind the scenes" view on my printer, but at least I can see enough to know if it starts extruding or not without having to get into the room where it is.
I strongly recommend this to anyone who is curious about it.
It is easier file handling as it is all done over my wifi. I slice the model here in S3D, save to disk, drag to the webpage with my pi and it is uploaded and automatically selected for me (plugin to select latest uploaded...) I just need to click "print" ...
The models are stored on the pi, and sent through USB to the printer. I've never had a print fail from my octopi installation.
Just adding some more fuel into "go test this!"...
Oh, if you have an ATX compatible power source, you can change the jumper on your RAMBo to take power from the USB port, and then send a GCODE to turn your power supply off (or on) form the start gcode, something I have yet to do, but looks like a nice addition...

Re: OctoPrint... thoughts?
What webcams are you guys using with the pi?I dont need streaming video per se but I would like hi res snaps with some consistency
Re: OctoPrint... thoughts?
I use the pi camera module with mine at the moment.
Works great, easy to use.
Since the cable is rather short, it really can't be elsewhere than on the pi =)

Re: OctoPrint... thoughts?
HERE is a list of cams that work with Octoprint. I just picked a cheap one from that list. I went with the Logitech HD Webcam C270, 720p ($24) I don't know if I'd call it high res but it works well enough to see whats going on. (of course I never played with any settings, just plug and played it.) The Octopi does stream and do time lapse but I can't remember off hand if it does snap shots.

Re: OctoPrint... thoughts?
For my uses, the only purpose of the octoprint is to replace the need for SD cards since my printers are in the same room as I. And, I'm fond of my SD cards because I have to clean up and preheat my printers between prints, anyways, so SDs are not exactly a problem to manage. The way M2 does it's SD is retarded, though (Needs to be connected to the PC to start the print off of SD? lol.), so I print directly from S3D.

Has anyone tried astroprint?
