Simplify3D profile with working materials/quality buttons

Post by jsc » Wed Mar 11, 2015 4:09 am

Sprior asked in the esun petg thread:
Hey rsilvers! I've been using your M2 optimized profiles from Thingiverse and was wondering if you'd consider making an updated version which uses the new Simplify3D file format and maybe uses one profile with multiple materials and qualities instead of individual profiles for each. I started to compare the existing profiles but wasn't sure which settings were the secret sauce.
So as not to hijack that thread, I'm making a new post. It's not rsilvers' profile, but I've gone through and put together a profile where all the materials/quality buttons work. You have to go in with a text editor and edit the FFF file by hand. If you just export your settings, you only get a single setting. Look for the autoConfigureMaterial and autoConfigureQuality sections. You can stuff in any parameters you want, although I've found that some things don't work (for example, you can't seem to set infillPercentage in an autoConfigureMaterial section).

I wouldn't advise anyone to use this profile themselves, as it's set up for my own use: dual extruders, PETG in the left and PLA in the right. Selecting PETG or PLA changes all the extruder settings and the temperature profile to the correct extruder, although it doesn't modify the startup code yet. If you want to make your own, export your current favorite profile and perhaps use mine as a guide to add your own material/quality sections.

For people with dual extruders, you have to add a T1 after the G28 homing to use the right extruder in the startup sequence.

Is there one for single extruders? Just the profile.

No, I haven't made one for single extruders. I highly suggest you use your own current profile as a starting point. There would need to be a great deal of modification anyway.

Mine is made for an E3D with a 0.040 nozzle but it should be way way way easier modified than starting a new one.

While I was originally using this profile for my dual M2, I thought it would be good to put a quick update here. First of all, the new 3.0 version of S3D now includes a dual extruder profile by default that comes with all the new ooze control goodies like automated ooze shields :D So you might want to try that if you've already upgraded.

I thought it was also good to know that you can now create and edit your auto configure presets from the UI, no need to edit them in a text editor like before. For example, if you want to make a new material preset for Ninjaflex, just click the "+" sign beside the material dropdown, name the new material, and then change the temperature or extrusion settings to match. It's automatically saved without any extra work. Made things a lot simpler for me.
